Today we hopped on the tube down to ICETANK and the Foreo Mikro Dentist event.
Fox isn’t too bad at brushing his teeth since we got him an electric tooth brush, but there’s definitely room for improvement so I was really keen to hear what Dr Mark Hughes (Foreo ambassador and Harley Street dentist) could suggest.
Now this event was a kid heaven! Colourful monsters, ball pool, giant Jenga, colouring in and lots of giant teeth! It was the perfect way to introduce Fox to dentistry. Not sure he’ll be as impressed when I take him to our practice, but at least he has started off with a very positive view.
Dr Mark said we were doing everything right (yes, I’m the Mum that won’t let him have sweets or chocolate and only juice at the weekend that’s so insanely watered down it’s hardly worth it!) He did tell me a few stats that shocked me and made me feel that although I’m strict on some aspects of dental hygiene, I’m really glad that I am. 55% of 3-5 year olds already have a filling and almost half of kids under 16 have been told their at risk of tooth decay.
Foreo kindly gave Fox their new, super cool ISSA Mikro, which he’s already fascinated with. It has soft silicon bristles that lift away plaque and massage gums. You can even use it with babies to help soothe those tiny teeth popping through. There’s a smiley face that lights up when you’ve brushed for 2 minutes and I can’t wait to see if that helps him brush for long enough!
They also gave me an ISSA2, which only needs to be charged for an hour to last a whole year! Really?! The head also comes off, so can be replaced when needed which is great. I will admit that after a long day of Mumming and then working into the night, I’m sometimes so tired that I want to brush my teeth as quickly as possible before I roll into bed. But this new toothbrush will remind me that I do need to brush for longer on those nights!
My dentist actually text me last week to remind me to book an appointment, so with that in mind…
TOP TIPS FOR TODDLER TOOTH BRUSHING
Make it fun, get your kids favourite toy or teddy and brush their ‘teeth’ too.
Brush your teeth with them and do a special tooth brushing dance.
Start with an electric brush early on. It helped Fox tremendously!
Do a countdown. Who can brush their teeth the most in 2 minutes?
Brush for your favourite people. This is what I do with Fox and it works 99% of the time. Ie. One tooth for Grandad, one for Daddy, one for Felix etc, etc.
Read books that involve teeth. Alan’s Big Scary Teeth is a favourite in our house.
This episode of Peppa Pig has been popular with Fox. So much so that he thought Dr Mark would be an elephant!
